“Why Should I Learn Hebrew?”

That’s a great question! It’s also one I get asked frequently.

I am very excited about answering this question. I will be sharing some of my personal reasons why I decided to study Hebrew and also the benefits and blessings of learning this language.

Hebrew is one of my biggest passions and it has become something very valuable to me.

I heard someone once say, “If you love someone, you learn their language.” This was speaking in terms of love languages. When you learn the language of a person you love, you get to know that person more and learn to communicate with them better. That’s one way I feel about Hebrew. I believe it is Yehovah’s language and because I love Him and desire to know Him more, I want to learn His language.

“What makes Hebrew special? Why should I learn Hebrew over a more modern, practical language like Spanish?” (Another question I’ve been asked recently).

Hebrew has so much deep and rich meaning in it. Every letter has a meaning by itself, and then you put those letters together to make words and they have a much fuller meaning. The language to me feels like a treasure chest! I am always finding and uncovering more precious jewels in the Hebrew Scriptures. There is so much value and beauty in the Hebrew language that sometimes I cannot even describe the things I have discovered. Many times when I’m studying the Hebrew Scriptures, I find myself astonished with what I find (You know it’s that JAW DROPPING gonna catch a fly in your mouth response. Anyone else experience this???)

Most of the Bible was originally written in Hebrew. What we believe comes from the Scriptures, and most of our Bibles are translations of translations. If we base our beliefs on what is Yehovah’s truth, but are reading it through a translation, do we truly understand what the Scriptures say?

When you read the Scriptures in your English translation of the Bible, you barely scratch the surface of the real meaning. It’s much deeper and richer than what we are seeing and understanding. That is one of the biggest reasons I began to study Biblical Hebrew. Studying the Scriptures through the Hebrew text has allowed me a better and closer understanding of what the Scriptures are actually expressing.

It has not only helped my understanding in the Scriptures, but it has also taught me more about the Character of my Father Abba.

I believe that Hebrew was the original spoken language between Adam and Yehovah in the garden of Eden. Hebrew has been revised since then, so it is not *exactly* the same Hebrew we speak today. I also believe that it is the language we all will be speaking in Eternity with Yehovah. It is the language of my Creator, Yehovah and that is one of the biggest reasons I want to learn it.

Studying the Hebrew language also gave me the opportunity to learn about Israel and the Jewish culture. I have the ability to explore their way of thinking, value systems, attitudes, society and much more. I admit, I love the land and people of Israel. I have traveled to Israel before and have plans to visit there again. Knowing the language helps me communicate with the people there.

There is always so much to ponder and learn in Hebrew, I just soak it all up and crave more. I am always learning new things in this fascinating language, that I know I could never have experienced this if I hadn’t learned the language.
Learning Hebrew gives you the ability to understand the Scriptures in a more meaningful way, get to know Yehovah and His Character better, and learn more about the land and people of Israel.
